Disney Princess Book Tag

Let's be real, now a days most of the protagonists of YA books are orphans or their parents basically aren't in the picture, so the T5W post for today just isn't going to happen, sorry. Also due to the fact that Iv'e been sick since last Thursday I haven't really gotten around to finishing the book review that I originally planned on posting today, instead I'm going to do this tag because it's been in my drafts pile for a while now and Disney related things are never a bad idea, right? Anyway, without any further delay, the Disney Princess Book Tag, originally created by...honestly I have no idea. Comment down below if you know, I guess.
P.S. I'm actually really excited to do this, don't let me seemingly indifferent intro make you think otherwise.

1. Snow White: What's your favorite classic?
   Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will always be one of my favorite classic books. Don't get me wrong, I also love Peter Pan and so may others, but there's something about the utter nonsensical ridiculousness of Wonderland that's always got me hooked. Plus, there are so many good retellings based off it, that you can't not appreciate the story.
            
2. Cinderella: What book kept you up way past your bedtime?
   The Book Thief was such a powerful book, I couldn't put it down. I read that book every chance I could form start to finish. Though, I'm not usually into books that make me really emotional, I loved this book no matter how many times it tore me apart.
     
3. Aurora: What's your favorite classic romance?
   Pride and Prejudice will forever be my answer to such questions. I mean, Jane Austen did good. Plus, the movie is basically everything.
   
       
4. Ariel: Name a book about making sacrifices and fighting for your dreams.
   The Darkest Part of the Forest...well Hazel fights in her dreams, close enough right? Okay, I really didn't know what to put for this one, but I really enjoyed this book. Besides, the cover's pretty gorgeous and ***SPOILERS*** Ben gets the prince, what more could you ask for?          
5. Belle: Name a book with a smart, independent female character.
   The Winner's Curse has some interesting characters in general, but Kestrel is such a fighter, plus she's hella smart. I mean c'mon, she got mad strategy skills. Though she independently goes off and does things I don't completely agree with sometimes, she's a damn smart cookie who pretty much always has a plan up her sleeve.
         
6. Jasmine: Name a book character that challenged the social conventions of his/her world.
   Cinder, from the Lunar Chronicle, is the most obvious choice for this one. She's a lunar cyborg who's got a thing with an earthen emperor, she lives in a place where cyborgs aren't even considered people, but property, and she's the heir to the Lunar kingdom. That and she kicks some serious ass. BAM. Nailed it.
       
7. Pocahontas: Name a book whose ending was a roller-coaster of emotions.
   Red Rising was roller-coaster in so many ways; action packed, craziness, emotions, I absolutely love it. One of my favorite books of 2015. If you haven't had the opportunity to read this book yet, get off of your craziness and go get it.
              
8. Mulan: Name a book with a kickass female character.
   The Harry Potter series has so many kickass characters I'm not even going to start with it. If you've read the series, or at least part of it, you know what I mean.
   
              
9. Tiana: Name a book featuring a hardworking, self-made character.
   In A Game for Thrones, well actually the whole A Song of Ice and Fire series, Deanerys Targaryen is the baddest of the bitches...okay, I guess that depends on who you ask. But really, when it comes to hardworking, self-made characters she really fought for her own and became someone that so many people would be proud to follow.
         
10. Rapunzel: Name a book that features an artist.
    I was originally going to go with the book If I Stay, but than I remembered that a large majority of what happens in the Splintered series is based around some of the characters art, from bug montages to bloody scenery. Besides, as I said earlier, Alice's Adventures In Wonderland retellings are rarely a bad idea.
         
11. Merida: Name a book that features a mother-daughter relationship.
    Though Molly Weasley is basically the mom of all moms, Connie Nicolson from Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging was a pretty awesome ma as well. I mean, yes, I only read the first two books in the series (and own the movie) but in those two books she was pretty awesome.
          
12. Anna and Elsa: Name a book with a great relationship between siblings.
    For the sake of not bringing up the Weasley family again, I'm going to have to go with the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe because Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie are a pretty bad ass group of siblings. What I really like is the fact that Lewis wrote such a fun story about four siblings instead of the usual two. Go Lewis for mixing it up a bit.
    
    

Okay, can we just talk about the Frozen gif? That's basically a perfect representation of my sister and I. To a T, no lie. Also, that Mulan gif was pretty awesome. This is the first time I've used gifs in a post (I think) and I don't know about you, but I'm kind of digging it.

April Book Haul!

I'm not usually one to do book hauls, but since I'm sick and forgot to post yesterday, I figured why not. Besides, I'm pretty excited about the books I got this month. I think I did pretty good job in both keeping my book buying to a minimum and also getting some seriously A+ books. I will say, that the fact if you spend $25 or more on books on Amazon you get free shipping was kind of what got me to pull the trigger on buying these books in the first place, and I'm so happy I did.

The Start-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi
I am so incredibly excited to have gotten my hands on this book, it was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, plus it has a down right gorgeous cover that's going to look great on my shelves. *Won this book via giveaway* 

Six of Crows (Six of Crows #1) by Leigh Bardugo 

I've heard so many amazing things about this book and heists are always a blast to read. I mean, I love the Oceans movies, so yeah. Plus when I saw the cover release of Crooked Kingdom I knew had to get my hands on this book ASAP.

The Winner's Kiss (The Winner's Trilogy #3) by Marie Rutkoski 
Rutkoski killed me a little bit in The Winner's Crime especially at the end. The moment I finished book 2 I Googled the release date of this book on my calendar and practically counted down the days until I could get. Now I have it, and it's so beautiful *tear* definitely gonna dive into this book when I'm down with what I'm currently reading...If I can practice self-control for that long. 

Morning Star (Red Rising #3) by Pierce Brown 
*crying tears of joy* Can I just hold this book until I die? Okay Okay, calm down Rachael. I know, I still haven't read Golden Son but I mean, now I have all three and I can binge read the last two. Red Rising was the last book I read in 2015 and probably my favorite book of the year as well. I hear that Morning Star has some moments that give you come serious feels, but I am so ready to see what awesomeness Brown has waiting in this book. 

Top 5 Books That Intimidate Me

Oddly enough even though these are all the most intimidating books that I'm facing right now, they are also all books that I want to read sometimes thins year. Almost all of these books are around 1000 pages long...that's pretty crazy, but their also some pretty incredible titles that I want to get my hands on and dive right into. Maybe if I'm lucky this reading slump will be completely gone by the end of this month. Hopefully. *crosses fingers*

1. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo

Pages: 1232
My main reason for being so intimidated by this book is the fact that I hear it is so emotional. I watched the movie and wanted to die about half a dozen times while watching it...I don't do feels very well. 

2. Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Pages: 964
I'm going to be honest, I barely know what this is about but I remember being so interested in reading it when I first heard about it. My dilemma is that it's nearly a thousand pages long. 

3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter #5) by J.K. Rowling

Pages: 870

One of my reading goals for this year is to finally read the Harry Potter series and so far it's actually really good. I'm mostly intimidated by the idea that, what if I read it and don't like it? I really really don't want to be let down by this series.

4. A Feast For Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire #4) by George R.R. Martin

Pages: 1060
George R.R. Martin is killing me slowly. The first three books in this series were so good and I cannot wait to get back into it, but, I mean, he is taking forever to write the next book in the series. I don't want to read the first five and than have to wait a year to read the next one. Also, this book is over a thousand pages long, who isn't intimidated by that kind of thing?

5. Outlander (Outlander #1) by Diana Gabaldon

Pages: 896
It's not just the first book in this series that intimidates me, it's the concept of reading the whole series. There are so many books in the series and each book is long. I hear the series is really good and worth the read, but you have to admit that diving into a series this huge is pretty damn intimidating.

Dorothy Must Die Book Review

Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die #1) by Danielle Paige

My Opinion: Iv'e never really been a big Wizard of Oz fan, but since Iv'e seen some interesting adaptions of it (e.g. Tin Man on Syfy and the TV show Supernatural) I thought I would give it a try. And wow, I'd be damned if I lied and said I wasn't pleasantly surprised with it. It was such a great re-imagining of a skewed Oz. The characters were interesting, to say the least, with some pretty imaginative magic use. It was chock full of emotions, confusions, and frustrations.  

“I hate to break it to you, but just because someone has pretty hair and a good skin tone and a crown instead of a pointy hat doesn’t mean she’s not the baddest bitch this side of the emerald city.” 

The take that Danielle Paige took on the original story was, in many ways, refreshing. I loved how she tool those whom most would perceive as the heroes and show them in a new light. Oh, and can I just say that one of my favorite parts of the entire story is that Dorothy is kind of a slut, and that the Tin Woodman is such a lover boy; I mean, that's kind of awesome. Other than that, most of the characters were exactly what you would expect once you actually get introduced to them. On the other hand though, the green eyed guy in the beginning gave me some pretty mixed feelings. In fact, the only thing I really like about him was that he basically told Amy to get the hell out of Oz because it's pretty fucked up. (ugh, language. Sorry)

“I’m not Glinda. I’m Glamora, her twin sister. She’s the Good witch; I’m the Wicked one. Of course, she’s also the one who’s turned Oz into the hellhole it is now, so it’s really all relative.” 

When it comes to the story itself, I will admit that it did have some flaws, but, lets be honest, no story is perfect. I did, however, love how everything is relative in the story, which is one of the truest things I have ever read in a YA book like this. Everything is based on perception. Like holy guacamole, (see I can do it without cursing) that's kind of deep...well sort of. Anyways, it's just different, especially in regards to retelling. Her entrance into Oz was exactly how you would expect, a tornado comes and she gets swept away, but than it's like, what the actual fuck just happened? (aaaaand I lost my no cursing momentum) She's on the edge of an abyss, sort of, a cute boy appears and disappears out of nowhere, everything is dead or dying, the air is hazy, and the yellow brick road moves? Honestly, I probably would have had a mini panic attack and possibly died way sooner than she did. But, than again, I'm not the protagonist in a hit novel. We can all wish though, right? 

“Simple. You’re going to kill her.” She looked right at me and said, “Dorothy must die.”

By the end of this book I had two thoughts running through my head: Was it too much to want to see Dorothy die? and *SPOILERS, sort of?* I am so happy there wasn't a love triangle.. *Sigh of relief* I mean, was I the only one who thought there might be a love triangle at the beginning of the book, or was I just imagining things? If you've read the book please let me know. (4/5)

Top 5 Books With "Hard" Topics

I'm not usually one for reading books with "hard" topics. Not because they aren't good, or moving, or anything like that; when I read I want to enter a world better than my own, full of adventure. With that being said, I have read some books with more difficult topics and I'm happy I did. 

Broken Silence (Silence #2) by Natasha Preston 

This is the story of a girl who was sexually abused for years and now her abusers are standing trial. I came across this as a free ebook on my kindle and thought I would give it a try, and I'm happy I did. This story is much more realistic than most stories following these kind of topics. Oakley is facing her abusers on the stand, while also putting herself back together and breaking her silence on everything she kept hidden

 for all those years.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn 
By now a lot of people have read this book or, at the very least, seen the movie. This is the only Gillian Flynn book I have ever read and will probably be the only one as well. While I wasn't a huge fan of this book I will say that it had a lot going on, dealing with things such as domestic abuse, rape, and the likes. This is definitely a book you have to be mentally prepared for before you go into it. 

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Despite the fact that this book can be humorous and even kind of sweet at times, there are some more serious things going on in it as well; from depression to abuse. Charlie faces so much in this story but Stephen Chbosky managed to add in the fact that even when everything is kind of going terribly, there is still something to smile about. One of the best parts about this is that its all written in letter that Charlie is writing to an anonymous person. 

If I Stay (If I Stay #1) by Gayle Forman
This was kind of a beautiful book in it's own way. Dealing with the aftermath of a car crash that killed her family and now she's in a coma herself while she's fighting on rather she should just give up to or live for the sake of what she still has left in the world. 

It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini
In my opinion I feel like the movie was better than the book (I know, blasphemy). This book deals with depression, suicidal thoughts, and other such things that come up in a psyche ward. The friendships and the love that goes on in this book is incredible in the sense that, again, it shows that no matter what, there's always a little ray of sunshine beating down in the darkness. 

100 Questions Nobody Asks Tag

I've seen this tag around for a while now and figured since I completely forgot to prepare a post for today *oops* that now would be a great time for me to jump on the train as well. 100 questions is a lot, but if you think you're brave enough to power through I would love to see your answer! Anyways, lets jump right on into this

1. Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?
   Closed. Not that I’m scared of monsters or anything, because lets be honest, the really scary things hide under the bed, I just always have my closet door closed.

2. Do you take the shampoo or conditioner bottles from hotels?Nope. Mainly because even if I do it ends up sitting in a drawer in my bathroom until I finally decide to just throw it away.

3. Do you sleep with your sheets tucked in or out?
   I actually sleep on top of my comforter under a throw blanket. I know, weird.

4. Have you ever stolen a street sign before?
   No. What would I do with it? Besides, they're usually really dirty and gross.

5. Do you like to use post-it notes?
   Yep. I really enjoy making things organized, plus they come in so many colors :)

6. Do you cut out coupons but never use them?
   No, in fact I hate cutting coupons .

7. Would you rather be attacked by big bear or bees?
   Bear,  because bugs kind of give me the creeps, and I always feel bad killing bees.

8. Do you have freckles?
   No.

9. Do you always smile for pictures?
   Of course, besides I feel like pictures are better when people are smiling.
    
10. What is your biggest pet peeve?
    Eating like an animal. IE. Constantly smacking your lips, eating with your mouth open, and other such things.

    Only when I get really bored or when I pace.

    YES! In fact, I love camping. Out of everywhere I have gone camping I'd say my favorite place was in the Redwoods!

    Sure, I have gone camping after all.

    It might’ve happened once or twice.

    All the time, especially anime. I really enjoy Bob's Burgers, InuYasha, Blue Exorcist, Ouran High School Host Club  and Seven Deadly Sins.
     

22. What’s your least favorite movie?
    Hmmm...nothing I can think of off of the top of my head.
     

23. Where would you bury hidden treasure if you had any?
    You know I cant tell you that :P

    Water if I'm at home and ice tea if I am at a restaurant.

    Barbecue sauce, forever and always.

    This is another tie, between my ma's homemade red beans and rice, and Caesar salads. 
     

27. What movies could you watch over and over again and still love?
    In regards to comedies; Galaxy Quest even though I’ve seen it many times and pretty much know every word of it, it still makes me laugh. In regards to romances; Pride and Prejudice (2005) which I also know pretty much every word to as well.

    Ugh, a friend of mine, lets just end it there.
     

29. Were you ever a boy/girl scout?
    I was a girl scout for a year a while ago and I also spent two days at a boy scout camp. I will say that boy scouts are so much more fun.
     

30. Would you ever strip or pose naked in a magazine?
    Nah, I'm not up for that kind of thing, but more power to the ladies who have the confidence for it.
     

31. When was the last time you wrote a letter on paper?
    Last year and I love to read hand written notes.

    I wish, but since I have so many friends who love to work on cars I've never really had to.

    Nope, but my parking skills aren't all that great.

    Yes, and it absolutely sucks.

    Ham and Swiss on wheat bread with spicy mustard, lettuce, and green peppers…I feel like I just ordered from Subway.

    Crepes are life.

    Around 11:30 or so.

    Sometimes.
     

39. When you were a kid what did you dress up as for Halloween?
    I always dressed up as random things, but the ones I remember the most are when I dressed up as a goddess and as a jester.

    Rat
     

41. How many languages can you speak?
    My native language is English, but I can also speak conversational Italian and know a bit of Latin. Also, like some many other people, I know greetings (eg. "Hello", "How are you?", etc.) in French, Afrikaans, Japanese, Chinese, Dutch and Spanish.
     
42. Do you have any magazine subscriptions?
    I used to, but now I just buy them every so often. I usually get National Geographic or Fitness.
     
43. Which are better, legos or lincoln logs?
    Legos, I was really into Legos when I was younger.
     
44. Are you stubborn?
    Yes, but I know when to let things go.
     

45. Which is better Leno or Letterman?
    I honestly don't care.
     

46. Ever watch soap operas?
    Not a big TV person.
     

47. Are you afraid of heights?
    No, not in the slightest, but I'm oddly terrified of being picked up.

    All the time.
     
49. Do you sing in the shower?
    Every day, I even have a playlist specifically for the shower.

    How exactly do you dance in a car? I have danced in buses plenty of times, but never in a car. I usually just tap my fingers and bob my head a little bit, I guess.

    Definitely. I used to be the team commander of the marksmanship team at my high school, and even though those were just air rifles, we went to the shooting range a few times. Not to brag but I would say that I ain't too shabby. Plus, when I was younger, I used to shoot trap.

    2014
     

53. Do you think musicals are cheesy?
    Not if they are done well.
     

54. Is Christmas stressful?
    Far from it. The holidays are my favorite time of the year!!

    I don't even know what it is.

    Hot apple pie with cinnamon and ice cream. Actually, that’s the only fruit pie that I like.
     

57. Occupations you wanted to be when you were a kid?
    Ever since I can remember I've wanted to be an Anthropologist, specifically, either Archeology or Linguistics. 
     

58. Do you believe in ghosts?
    I don't not believe in them, but honestly, I don't really give it much thought.

    Too often, but ever since I found out what causes the feeling, it's just not the same.

    Every morning.

    Nope. I wear socks and slides around the house, but that’s mostly because I don't even own slippers.

    Only when I am about to take a shower.

    PJ's! I really like matching sets.

    I've only ever been to one so my options are very limited :P

    Target, but considering I work at there my opinion might be a little biased.

    Nike if I am doing anything athletic. Adidas for casual day-to-day wear.

    Neither really, but if I had to choose I would have to say Cheetos.

    Honey Roasted Peanuts are the best!
     

69. Ever heard of the group Tres Bien?
    Nope.
     

70. Ever take dance lessons?
    Never, but I always thought it would fun...Oh, wait! I once had to learn how to square dance because the NJROTC I was in had a square dance. It was way more fun than I thought it was going to be :)
     

71. Is there a profession you picture your future spouse doing?
    Something they are passionate about.
     

72. Can you curl your tongue?
    I don't really sit around and try, let me see...Nope. I can't cross my eyes either.

    Never participated. I don’t even remember any being organized around.
     

74. Have you ever cried because you were so happy?
    Once or twice.

    I wish!

    Again, I wish!

    Only during the warmer months so I can have a window open. Fresh air, summer breeze and incense is pretty great.

    Imagine Dragons, X Ambassadors, Coldplay and loads of others.

    None.

    Excluding celebrity crushes....I honestly don’t know.

    Cold tea is definitely the way to go, besides I'm not much of a hot drink kind of person.

    Well considering I don't like snickerdoodles-like, at all...Sugar cookies are pretty damn great, but oatmeal chocolate chip is probably my all time favorite.

    I'd say I'm pretty good, but in no way a competitive level.

    Umm...yes?

    I say it depends on the size of the wedding; if it's small go with a band for a more intimate setting, if it's big go with a DJ so you can party hard all night!

    Never really been into individual competitions, but I've been on the winning team for many competitions. #bobcatforlife

    Nope, but I have had surgery before. Plastic surgery just isn't something I'm all that into, but if you want it, good for you.
     
90. Which are better, black or green olives?
    I really really don’t like any kind of olives.
     
91. Can you knit or crochet?
    Neither, really. It's not something I've ever really been into. I'm more of a drawer.
     
92. Best place for a fireplace?
    Hmmm. That's a tough one. I would have to say a library or a living room, but I'm not a big fire place person.
     
93. Do you want to get married?
    Someday.
     
94. If married how long have you been married?
    Not married yet. My 19-year-old self couldn’t handle that kind of commitment yet.
     
95. Who was your HS crush?
    Considering I hardly ever talk to him anymore but my best friend still thinks we will get married someday, I think I'm going to omit his name for now. *sly-smile*
     
96. Do you cry and throw a fit until you get your own way?
    Definitely not. I use my words. Besides, they always say, "it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission."

    Nope.
     
98. Do you want kids?
    Yep, though I want to adopt as well.

    Well considering I'm no longer five, I don’t really have a favorite color. However, I do really like the color blue.
     
100. Do you miss anyone right now?
     My closest friends all live across the country from me, so I most definitely miss people right now, but the invention of cellphones make it a little easier.

I actually got pretty excited for this weeks topic because Rainy Day Reads can be taken differently by different people. I for one love adventure books when it's rainy outside! Don't get me wrong, I love myself a sweet little book as well, but nothing is better than a good adventure! What do you enjoy on a rainy day?

March Wrap-Up and April TBR

This month has definitely been all over the place for me and to make matters worse I've been on a pretty bad reading slump for like two weeks now, and I see no end in sight, hopefully April will be better to me. But I don't completely blame March. The reading slump started when I was reading Frankenstein, which coincidentally was about the same time that I started my new job, which is a whole other beast. However, there are lots of books I want to get into in April that I have been dying to read. Maybe my anime-binge-watching/reading slump will come to an end sooner rather than later.
